Community Family Life
Transitional Housing for Homeless
Populations
$375 per person
7 days, 6 nights
Community Family Life Services (CLFS)
was founded in 1969 by First Trinity Lutheran Church
to address the needs of recently released ex-offenders and
their families. Since then, it has grown and evolved to
provide services to low-income and homeless families and
individuals in the District of Columbia and now serve more
than 5,000 people annually.
The mission of CLFS is to give people living in
poverty and homelessness the tools they need to move towards
permanent economic and social self-sufficiency. In addition
to offering short-term crisis assistance, they also empower
families and individuals to change their lives for the
better by providing a variety of services in the following
areas: Housing Services; Supportive Services & Community
Outreach; and Youth Development & Advocacy.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to renovate an
apartment that a family will call home,
providing some sweat and muscle to beautify the yard and
interior of the home. Through this project, students
will assist CLFS to break the cycles of poverty that
children and families battle each day.
While in the District of Columbia, students will have the
opportunity to sight-see in our nation's capital, visiting
such places as the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, the
Capitol Building and much more!

El Yunque National Rain Forest
Preservation of Natural Vegetation
& Environment
$450 per person
7 days, 6 nights
Located on the Caribbean Island of Puerto
Rico in
the Greater Antilles group, the El Yunque
National Forest
is the sole tropical rain forest
in the U.S. National Forest System. Its year-round
tropical climate and immense biodiversity make El Yunque
significantly different from all the other U.S. National
Forests.
The rain forest is noted for its
biodiversity, and is home to thousands of native plants
including 150 fern species, 240 tree species (88 of these
are endemic or rare and 23 are exclusively found in this
forest). The El Yunque National Forest has no large wildlife
or poisonous species, but hundreds of smaller animals abound
in this gentle forest, many of which exist nowhere else on
the planet!
Clayton State University students will offer their volunteer
services to help El Yunque welcome and educate visitors and
maintain its natural beauty! Projects include general
maintenance activities in the recreation areas and trails at
El Yunque National Forest such as graffiti removal, sign
cleaning, maintenance and cleaning of all shelter, cleaning
and painting of bridges and road railings, debris removal,
and maintaining all areas free of litter and trash, amongst
others.
While in Puerto Rico, students will have the opportunity
to learn the rich heritage and culture of
Latin traditions and history, including visiting San Juan,
the Old Battle Fort, the beach, and exploring the cultural
foods and delicacies of Puerto Rico!
