What Tutoring Is and Isn't
Tutoring is a strategy for strengthening a learner's study skills and ability to learn. Consciously tailored to the learning style and intellectual background of the individual, tutoring is empowerment. It builds confidence, teaches new strategies for grappling with content, and helps refine a student's thinking processes.
Although there is some overlap, tutoring is not the same process as teaching. Most teaching is focused on subject matter, while tutoring (if it's done correctly) is focused on the learner. Tutoring isn't a substitute for doing homework, and it's not a substitute for going to class. It isn't editing or proofreading or otherwise doing a student's work for him or her.
Tutoring is the process of helping a learner acquire the tools s/he needs to be successful with academic assignments.
