From Soldier to Student: Helping Combat Veterans Return to Campus
Our troops have supported us, and now it is our turn to support them!

The Counseling Services staff welcomes and invites all student veterans currently enrolled at Clayton State University to join us for a series of Veterans Coffee Socials. These socials are intended to foster a sense of community and support among the student veterans and give them the opportunity to meet other veterans.

Within the last year, we have seen a gradual increase in the number of veterans on our campus who are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan to begin or continue their education. We anticipate an increase in the number of veteran students this year. While you mingle with other veterans during this coffee social, we plan to have information for you about war zone stress in case you are experiencing delayed combat stress symptoms. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to meet professional helpers and learn more about resources available to you on campus and in the community.

We realize that not all veterans will experience the post stress reaction from combat. However, we want this coffee social to become a venue where you gain a sense of support and meet others with the common experience of being a veteran regardless of service background.

Veterans experiencing post combat stress may have difficulty adjusting to life’s demands after an extended period of exposure to severe emotional or mental trauma, hypervigilance, and highly stressful working and living conditions. As they return to school, some may experience difficulty and frustration adjusting to the stress and demands of college life. Many veterans may also experience family or interpersonal problems that affect social functioning.

If you are a veteran, we look forward to seeing you at the social. If you know of student veteran on this campus who might enjoy meeting other veterans, please forward this information to them.

Please direct any questions and/or concerns to me via e-mail, phone, or come by to visit.
