HOPE Changes

Attention HOPE Grant and HOPE Scholarship Recipients

All HOPE Students

  • HOPE will not cover Clayton State University’s mandatory fees in full. Beginning in 2005, HOPE will only pay $229 towards the university's mandatory fees.

Clayton State University’s 2006-2007 mandatory fees are $282. The 2007-2008 mandatory fees are $357.  You will be responsible for payment of the difference.

Certificate Students

  • Beginning Summer 2005, HOPE Grant allows up to 63 "paid hours" (the number of hours the HOPE program has paid for)

Degree-Seeking Students

  • Beginning Summer 2005, the HOPE programs allows up to 127 HOPE Scholarship "paid hours" (the number of hours the HOPE programs has paid for)

This 127 "paid hours" limit combines hours paid for the by the HOPE Grant and the HOPE Scholarship combined.

  • EXAMPLE:
Ima Laker begins in a certificate program and is paid for 50 hours. She then begins the coursework for a bachelor’s degree program and is eligible for the HOPE Scholarship. Ima can only be paid through the Hope Program for an additional 77 hours, for a total of 127 hours.

  • The 127 attempted hours limit for the HOPE Scholarship is still in place.
  • The HOPE Scholarship can be gained or regained at the 30th, 60th, or 90th hour checkpoint (no change). The HOPE Scholarship cannot be gained or regained at the new End-of-Spring Checkpoint.

There are two types of checkpoints with ONE exception:

  • Attempted Hours Checkpoint
You are checked for a minimum 3.0 HOPE GPA at your 30th, 60th, and 90th attempted  semester hour.

  • EXAMPLE:
Ima Laker has 45 hours prior to Summer Semester with a 2.95 HOPE GPA. Ima enrolls in 18 hours for Summer Semester. At the end of Summer Semester, Ima has 63 attempted HOPE hours and a 2.97 HOPE GPA. She loses her HOPE eligibility. She can be evaluated for HOPE again after her 90th attempted hour.

  • End-of-Spring Checkpoint
You will also be checked at the End-of-Spring checkpoint for a minimum 3.0 HOPE GPA.

  • EXAMPLE:
Bea Laker is a first-time freshman and enrolls in 15 hours for Fall Semester. She has a 2.97 HOPE GPA after her first term. She enrolls in 12 hours for Spring Semester. After Spring Semester, she is checked for HOPE eligibility. Since she has a 3.0 HOPE GPA after Spring, she retains her HOPE eligibility. Her next checkpoint will be after she attempts 30 semester hours.

  • Exception to End-of-Spring Checkpoint
Freshmen (less than 30 attempted hours) who enroll for less than 12 hours can receive three terms of HOPE before their grades are checked. However, the Three-Term Checkpoint can only be applied ONCE to a student. After that, they will be checked at the Attempted Hours Checkpoints and the End-of-Spring Checkpoint regardless of the number of hours taken each semester.

  • EXAMPLE #1:

Ben A. Laker is a first-time freshman. His enrollment history:

Fall Semester: 10 hours with 3.1 HOPE GPA

Spring Semester: 11 hours with 2.9 HOPE GPA

Since he has been enrolled less than full-time, he will NOT be checked at the end of Spring Semester. He then enrolls:

Summer Semester: 10 hours with 3.1 HOPE GPA

Since Ben has now attempted 31 hours and has a 3.1 HOPE GPA, he will continue to be HOPE eligible. His next checkpoint will be at the end of Spring Semester.

    EXAMPLE #2:

Ben A. Laker is a first-time freshman. His enrollment history:

Fall Semester: 6 hours with 3.1 HOPE GPA

Spring Semester: 6 hours with 2.9 HOPE GPA

Since he has been enrolled less than full-time, he will NOT be checked at the end of Spring Semester. He then enrolls:

Summer Semester: 12 hours with 3.1 HOPE GPA

Since Ben was enrolled part-time his first two terms and then enrolled full-time for his third term, he will be checked for HOPE eligibility after he reaches 30 attempted hours OR the next Spring Semester, whichever comes first.
