What is work-study?

The Federal Work-Study program provides part-time jobs to students with financial aid eligibility. Your eligibility depends on your financial need, other types of aid you receive, and the availability of work-study funds and positions at .

How do I know if I am eligible?

You must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the appropriate academic year. After you are awarded, contact the Financial Aid Office to be reviewed for work-study eligibility.

If eligible, you will be placed on the waiting list for the current academic year. Please note that the waiting list does not roll over to the next academic year. You must contact the Financial Aid Office after you are awarded to be placed on the list for the next academic year. There is no guarantee of employment if you are placed on the waiting list. Placement is dependent upon availability of funds and position.

Career Services, Student Center #250, has job listings for students who are not eligible for work-study or who are looking for jobs in the community.

What are the benefits of work-study?

  • You have the convenience of having a job on or near the campus.
  • You can arrange your work schedule around your classes.
  • Unlike loans, work-study funds do not have to be repaid.
  • You acquire job skills you can use after graduation.

What kind of jobs are available?

Work-study jobs are available in many on-campus offices. There are also mentor positions located in several local elementary schools during the school year. A background check is required for the mentor positions at no cost to you. More information on the mentor program can be found here.

One important note - evening and weekend work-study positions are rarely available.

How much will I earn?

The salary for on-campus positions is $6.05 an hour, and $6.45 for off-campus mentor positions. The number of hours you work will depend on your eligibility but would be no more than 19.5 hours per week. You receive a paycheck every two weeks for the hours that you work.

What else do I need to know?

You will be able to select a position that interests you but you must interview, have the necessary skills, and meet any other department requirements.

Keep in mind that there is a waiting list for work-study positions. Every effort is made to place each eligible student, but there is no guarantee of employment. Placement is dependent on availability of funds and positions.

Please note that the waiting list does not roll over to the next academic year. You must contact the Financial Aid Office after you are awarded to be placed on the new list.

You will be contacted at your  email account if positions or funds become available. That email will contain the information you will need to begin your search for a work-study position.

How should timesheets be submitted?

Effective August 10, 2007, all timesheets should be sent to Sabrina W. Williams, Work-Study Coordinator, in the Office of Financial Aid. These timesheets will be due by 4:00pm as listed by the dates below. The timesheets should be dropped off in the box labeled “Financial Aid Documents’ located outside the Office of Financial Aid, Student Center, Suite 102. It is imperative that Supervisors ensure timesheets are turned in by the listed time as the Work-Study Coordinator is required to review and forward the timesheets to Payroll. Please pay special attention to the signatures and dates as incorrect timesheets cannot be processed and will delay the student’s paycheck until the next payroll period.
