Book (or Movie) Review
Click on book
report if you need to learn how to write a book report, not a book
review.
1.
Find the copyright date of the book you want to review. This can
be found on the back of the title page, with a
© followed by the date. If there is more
than one copyright date, the earliest date should have the most available reviews.
For movies, find out the year the movie
was released.
2. Books
copyrighted from 1986 to the present may be found
in GALILEO.
The
New York Times
has free exclusive online access to
their book reviews in full text from 1981
to the present. If your book was published before 1986, you
will need to use the print resources: Book Review Digest
or Book Review Index.
3. To
search, go to GALILEO.
(If you are off campus, you will need the
GALILEO Password for this semester.)
4. Click
on either Academic Search Premier (at
EBSCOhost) or
Research Library (at ProQuest)
from the homepage.
5.
Academic Search Premier (at EBSCOhost)
- type in the title of the book (or movie)
or the author's
(or director's) last name,
followed by the phrase, and reviews.
- if you want a review by a scholar,
check the box after Scholarly
(Peer Reviewed)
Journals
- click Search
- For
example, to find reviews of Plainsong by Kent Haruf,

or haruf and reviews
6.
Research Library (at ProQuest)
- click the green tab Advanced
- type in the title of the book (or movie) in the first box and
in the second box, type in the author's (or director's) last name.
- click on the gray tab at the bottom of the screen, More
Search Options
- go down to the box after
Document Type, click
on the arrow and choose book review (or movie
review)
- if you want a review by a scholar,
check the box for Scholarly journals, including
peer-reviewed
- click Search
10. If
the review is not full text, write down
the source information (journal title, article title,
author, volume number, date, page numbers.) There is also
an email feature on both databases, you can email the citation
information to your email account.
11.
Use
GIL@CSU to see if the Clayton State University Library
subscribes to the journal you are needing. The
periodicals in the CSU Library are shelved in alphabetical order, by
journal title. The exception
to this is the New York Times Book Review, which will be on microfilm, in the cabinets in
the microfilm area.
12. If
the CSU Library does not have it, you can
request the article through
InterLibrary Loan.
