The Great Depression

This site includes an overview of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, a Depression Photo Essay and Art Gallery.

America from the Great Depression to WWII Created by a group of U.S. government photographers, the images show Americans in every part of the nation. In the early years, the project emphasized rural life and the negative impact of the Great Depression, farm mechanization, and the Dust Bowl. In later years, the photographers turned their attention to the mobilization effort for World War II.

Surviving the Dust Bowl Lured by the promise of rich, plentiful soil, thousands of settlers came to the Southern Plains, bringing farming techniques that worked well in the North and East. The farmers subsequently plowed millions of acres of grassland, only to have the rains stop in the summer of 1931.  This site explores the catastrophic eight-year drought that followed known as the "The Dust Bowl."
