The fourth edition of this classic work is intended for scholars and laymen alike.

New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians / REF ML100.N48 2001
This second edition contains 29 volumes and is considered to be the standard in the music field for coverage of music history, music genres, and individuals associated with music.  Individual compositions are addressed under the composer name only.

The Encyclopedia of Musical Theatre / REF ML102.M88 G3 2001
This three-volume set is primarily English and American in scope.  It provides biographical as well as show information.

The New Grove Dictionary of Opera / REF ML102.O6 N5 1992
The four volumes of this set provide extensive detailed coverage of opera personalities (composers, singers, directors, and conductors) as well as individual operas.

Baker’s Biographical Dictionary of Musicians / REF ML105.B16 2001
This set provides extensive coverage of classical musicians in its six volumes.  The latest edition does provide some coverage of musicians in pop, rock and jazz.

The New Oxford History of Music / REF ML160.N44
In ten volumes, this set primarily addresses Western music from ancient times to 1960.  Limited coverage is provided for selected non-Western musical traditions.

Contemporary Musicians / REF ML385.C615
This title provides information on the personalities in today’s music industry.  Broad coverage is given to a variety of music styles from country to rap and everything in between.  Each entry provides a discography as well as a bibliography.  The set contains 50+ volumes and continues to grow.

American Musical Traditions / REF ML3551.A53 2002
The five volumes of this set provide a well-illustrated and indexed ethnomusicological treatment of a broadly defined “American” music.  It includes coverage of African American, Latin American, Asian American, and Native American music.

Digital Mozart Edition A complete digitized edition of the collected works of W. A. Mozart is available here online, reproduction from the critically edited Neue Mozart Ausgabe.
Music for the Nation: American Sheet Music This is a digital archive from the collection of the Library of Congress which contains over 47,000 pieces of sheet music registered for copyright during the years 1870 to 1885. Included are popular songs, piano music, sacred and secular choral music, solo instrumental music, method books and instructional materials, and music for band and orchestra. Audio recordings of selected works are also available.
Southern Mosaic: A 1939 Recording Trip of the South The John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip is a multiformat ethnographic field collection that includes nearly 700 sound recordings, as well as field notes, dust jackets, and other manuscripts documenting a three-month, 6,502-mile trip through the southern United States. Beginning in Port Aransas, Texas, on March 31, 1939, and ending at the Library of Congress on June 14, 1939, John Avery Lomax and his wife Ruby recorded approximately 25 hours of folk music from more than 300 performers. Photographic prints from the Lomaxes' other Southern states expeditions illustrate the collection.
Popular American Music Collection (UCLA) This is a digital archive of sheet music from the UCLA Popular American Music Archive. The history of popular music in the United States from 1790 to the present is covered, with particular strength in the areas of theater, motion pictures, and radio and television.
Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music This is a digital archive of sheet music from the Lester S. Levy Collection at Johns Hopkins University. It contains over 29,000 pieces of music and focuses on popular American music spanning the period 1780 to 1960. All music in the collection that was both published before 1923 and now in the public domain can be accessed online.
Choral Public Domain Library A wiki collection including over 7500 sheet music scores in the public domain, as well as texts, translations, and midi files.
Smithsonian Global Sound Project A database of recorded folk music from around the world, taken from the Folkways archive and other collections. Tracks can be purchased to download; free samples are also available.
Virtual Instrument Museum Contains still images, as well as audio and video clips, of over one hundred folk instruments from around the world.
Medieval and Renaissance Instruments Pictures, audio clips, and resources for further study regarding 32 medieval and renaissance instruments.

The Lied and Art Songs Text Page An archive of 18,048 texts used in Lieder and other classical art songs  as well as in many choral works and other types of classical vocal pieces. Several thousand translations to English, French, German, Spanish and other languages are also offered.
Aria Database A database of arias: including composer and opera information, tessitura, texts with translations, and lists of published recordings and scores.
