FY2010 Mandatory Furlough Program
All University System of Georgia employees will be required to take six days of leave without pay during fiscal year 2010 under this Mandatory Furlough Program. This program applies to all USG employees regardless of source of funds, or place of work, including staff, administrators, faculty and all other employees in classified and unclassified positions, including, but not limited to, time-limited, intermittent, temporary employees, and new hires.
There are several critical elements in the program:
- At least three days must be scheduled before the end of the calendar (2009) year.
- After considerable campus discussion, we have identified common furlough days for faculty and staff alike: Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009; Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009; and Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009.
- Furlough days after January 1, 2010
- We will have two common campus wide days for staff—March 8 (Monday) and May 14 (Friday).
- We will have only one campus wide day for faculty—March 8
- Each staff employee, with approval for their supervisor, will determine their third day.
- Each faculty employee, with approval from their supervisor, will determine their second and third day.
- The requested and approved days for all employees should be submitted to Karen Born in The Human Resource Department by
December 15, 2009.
- Salary reductions in the furlough days must occur within the pay period during which the furlough day is taken
- Employees whose salary would fall below $23,660 after furlough reductions are exempt from furlough requirements
- Employees working on H1B visas are also exempt
- Furlough days may not result in the cancellation of classes
- Furlough days will not result in a reduction in university contributions to faculty and staff retirement plans
