Ms.
Amy Castillo, a Teacher Education and Music
Education major, was the Transportation Champion
for March 2005.
Amy organized her own carpool from Lithonia
last semester and had six other students
carpooling with her to Clayton State. They
thought it would be easier to get to school, to
get a little more sleep or study time. Since Amy
has a van, she offered to drive so they could be
“one big group”. Amy stated, “Some of the people
get to sleep, we share music, things going on in
our life, stuff going on at school, we complain
about things that are bothering us. We are a
group of girls—we like to talk!”
Amy lives in Lithonia, about 26 miles from
Clayton State and this saves considerable fuel
costs. “I like carpooling. Not only does it save
everyone gas and mileage, but I like the time I
get to spend with the people in my group,” Amy
said.
Last semester, the carpool group had about the
same schedule. However, this semester some have
had to wait around for others, but this has not
been a real problem.
They not only carpooled to Clayton State
University but also carpooled when they had to
go to middle schools. Amy's other carpool
partners have been Shawdelle Bastable, Angela
Ollie, Daisy Walker, Lotus Gilbert and Natasha
Clark.
We applaud her efforts and concerns for the
environment.
