Regents Test
Students are required to take the Regents' Test the first semester they attend any state institution and every subsequent semester until it is passed, unless they are exempt or in Learning Support English or Reading.
The Regents' Test is designed to certify the reading and writing competency of all students seeking an associate's or bachelor's degree in the University System of Georgia. Students transferring from one school to another within the Georgia system must continue with the requirements as though they had not transferred.
The exam has two sections: essay and reading. Students are given 60 minutes to complete each section and are required to take both sections at one sitting. The essay section requires the student to write a clear, organized essay on one of four topics; the reading section requires the student to demonstrate reading comprehension skills.
Students eligible for extended time due to a disability, international status or the third successful completion of a skills class must be pre-approved by the deadline below; special extended-time sections must be scheduled with Disability Services or the Testing Center after approval. Students are not required to test before graduating from high school.
New Requirements--Effective Spring Semester 2009: In general, students at a state school are required to take the Regents' Test the first semester and each subsequent semester until it is passed; those who have not satisfied the Regents' requirements by the time they are in their 3rd semester at a state school must take the Regents' Skills Course(s) during each subsequent semester of enrollment until the requirement is met.
Exceptions and clarifications:
1. Students with low failures on the Regents' Exam will be required to take the Regents' Skills Course(s) the next semester they are in school. See the Board of Regents' website for further information: http://www.gsu.edu/~wwwrtp/.
2. Part-time students must take the Regents' Test in the first and each subsequent semester until it is passed. Those who have not satisfied the Regents' Skills requirements by the time they earn 20 credit hours must take the Regents' Skills Course(s) during each subsequent semester of enrollment, except that such students should be allowed at least three semesters of enrollment before the Regents' Skills Course(s) are required.
3. Non-Georgia system transfer students must take the Regents' Test in the first and each subsequent semester until it is passed. These transfer students may test the first semester without requiring the Regents' Skills Course(s); they may be required to take the skills course(s) the second and subsequent semesters. They will be classified for skills course(s) purposes by how many semesters they transferred to the Georgia system school. Once non-Georgia system transfer students have completed 2 semesters and reached 24 earned hours total from all institutions, the skills course(s) are required if the Regents' Test is not passed.
