Are the rooms co-ed?

The residence hall is a suite-style, co-ed living environment; however, each individual apartment suite is same-gender.

How much does it cost to live in the residence hall?

The housing cost is $2475 per semester for a 10-month contract (August through May), totaling $4950 for the academic year. The meal plan cost is $1425 per semester, or $2850 for the academic year. The total room and board cost per semester is $3900. There are three meal plan options that consist of a combination of meals per week and Dining Dollars. Room and meal plan costs are charged directly to the resident’s university student account, and his/her available financial aid funds can be used to pay all or some of the costs.

Why are residents required to have a meal plan?

The room and board package is designed to promote academic success and overall wellness through healthy living, which includes a healthy diet. In addition, the apartment suites are equipped with kitchenettes that are perfect for fixing a quick afternoon or late-night snack, but not necessarily a full gourmet meal! There are three different meal plans from which to choose that will suit residents with a hearty appetite and those who prefer to have more flexibility with their dining options.

Can residents choose their roommates?

New residents can request to be assigned together in an apartment suite by indicating their roommate preferences on the Resident Profile that is completed with the Housing Contract. Please note that the residents will need to request each other in order for this preference to be considered. If a resident does not have a specific roommate request, the resident will be assigned with roommates based upon the responses on the Resident Profile.

What if a resident cannot get along with his/her roommate(s). What should s/he do?

If a resident has issues with his/her roommate(s) that cannot be worked out, the resident should contact his/her Resident Assistant (RA) to assist in mediating the conflict. Room change requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Can residents have guests?

Yes, residents are allowed to host guests, but all guests must be signed-in and signed-out at the 24-Hour Community Desk. In addition, all residents and their guests must abide by the Visitation Policy.

Is it safe to live in the residence hall?

Clayton State University’s campus is located in close proximity to a large, urban area. As is the case with any institution in a similar location, students should take all necessary safety precautions, walk in groups at night, and be aware of surroundings at all times. The residence hall has swipe card access into the building and the apartment suite, and each individual bedroom has its own key. The community itself is equipped with 60 security cameras within the building, and there is a 24-Hour Community Desk in the lobby area. Furthermore, there is a planned 24-Hour Security Center adjacent to the building to be staffed by Clayton State’s Office of Public Safety.

Will the residence hall have internet service?

The residence hall will be the only Gigaplex residence hall in Georgia, offering 1000 Mb/s Ethernet for every hardwired port. Each bedroom will have a hardwired port with Gigabit Ethernet service, and the building will have complete Wi-Fi coverage, allowing residents to “stay connected” wherever they are.

What are the dimensions of the rooms?

The actual bedroom is 100 square feet. The apartment suite is 1106 square feet.

What does the room include?

Each bedroom is fully furnished with an extra long twin-size bed (sleeping surface of 36” x 80”), a chest of drawers, a desk, a chair, and a closet. The shared apartment suite living room area is furnished with a sofa, chair, end tables, and television stand.

Are microwave ovens provided? What about refrigerators?

Each suite has a kitchenette with a microwave and a full-size refrigerator with a freezer. There is a full community kitchen on the first floor.

What size sheets will fit on the bed?

The dimensions of the mattress are 36” x 80”, which is considered to be extra long twin-size.

Is carpeting provided?

There is carpet in each bedroom and the living room area of each apartment suite. The kitchen area and bathrooms have tiled floors.

What items should residents plan to bring with them?

Residents should plan to bring personal items with them, such as bedding, toiletries, school supplies, clothing, etc.  A more detailed list will be posted soon.

Can residents bring their own furniture?

All furniture that is in the apartment suite and bedroom at move-in cannot be removed, so residents will not be able to bring their own furniture. However, residents are welcome to bring small personal items, like a filing cabinet or small plastic shelves/drawers.

Are residents’ personal belongings insured?

All resident students are advised to purchase renter’s insurance for their personal belongings through a private insurance provider, as students’ personal belongings are not covered in the event of theft, damage, loss, etc. Some residents may be covered under their parents’ homeowners’ insurance policies; however, it is best to verify coverage with the insurance company.

Is the residence hall air-conditioned and heated?

Yes. Each apartment suite has its own thermostat to control the heating and cooling.

Are laundry facilities available in the residence halls?

A community laundry room is located on the main floor of the residence hall. Residents will use their LakerCard to pay for washing and drying clothes, and they will be able to load money on their card at the LakerCard Center in the University Center. Pricing for the laundry machines has not yet been determined.

Is Cable TV provided in the residence halls?

Yes, all bedrooms and the apartment suite living rooms are equipped with expanded basic Cable TV service with High-Def capabilities. In addition, residents may contract through the provider for additional premium channels, HD packages, and Pay-Per-View. Residents must provide their own TV and cable cord.

When do residents find out who their roommates are?

Residents will receive roommate information during the Summer.

What should a resident do when s/he receives the names of his/her roommates?

It is recommended that a resident try to make contact with his/her roommate(s) prior to move-in, in order to make friendly introductions and possibly discuss shared items to bring.

When can residents move-in? What are the details and instructions for Move-In Day?

Move-In Day is scheduled for Thursday, August 14, 2008. Residents will receive additional information and instructions over the Summer, regarding parking, move-in times, etc.

What is the residence hall Visitation Policy?

All guests must signed-in and signed-out at the 24-Hour Front Desk and must be escorted by his/her host resident at all times while in the building.  Full Visitation Policy.

Is smoking allowed in residence hall rooms?

No, the residence hall is a non-smoking facility.

What is the alcohol policy?

Alcohol is strictly prohibited in the residence hall.

What are quiet hours? When are they?

Quiet Hours are strictly enforced after 10:00 PM. However, Courtesy Hours are in effect 24 hours, which means that residents should be reasonably quiet and if a roommate, a neighbor, or a staff member asks another resident to quiet down, s/he is expected to do so.

Are residents allowed to paint or decorate their rooms?

Resident students should feel free to personalize their bedroom and make it their home; however, residents are not permitted to paint their bedroom or apartment suite and should not put holes (i.e., nails, tacks, etc.) in the walls.

Are residents permitted reside in the residence hall during academic breaks?

The residence hall will remain open during academic breaks, and residents are permitted to stay in their apartment suites if they have properly registered with the Residence Life staff. Staffing may be reduced during break periods, so some hours and services may be limited.

What type of staff is available in the residence halls?

The residence hall will feature a 24-hour staff in the form of 18 Resident Assistants who reside throughout the building and are available to assist residents. In addition, the 24-Hour Community Desk will be staffed at all times, and there will be maintenance staff on-call to respond to after-hours emergencies. The professional staff will work in the office in the residence hall during business hours; however, there will always be a professional staff member on-call 24/7 to respond to emergency situations.

Who should a resident contact when something needs to be fixed in his/her room?

Residents will be able to submit routine work orders online; however, emergency work orders (i.e., floods, power outages, broken locks, etc.) can be reported to the 24-Hour Community Desk or the Housing Office during business hours.

Where should residents report Vending/Laundry issues?

Any issues with the vending or laundry should be reported to the 24-Hour Community Desk.

Who is responsible for cleaning residents’ apartment suites/bedrooms?

Residents are responsible for cleaning and maintaining their individual bedrooms and apartment suites. Residence Life staff will conduct periodic Apartment Health and Safety Inspections to ensure that the apartment suites are being kept in a reasonably clean and sanitary condition.

Where should trash be disposed of?

Residents are responsible for properly disposing of their trash in the designated dumpster areas outside the building.

What is the resident mailing address?

Each resident will have his/her own individual mailbox. The following format can be used for all mail and packages that are sent to you:

What will happen to resident mail during summer break?

Residents can work with the US Postal Service to forward their mail to a different address over the summer; however, all mail received at the residence hall after move-out will be returned to the sender.

Do residents need to bring their own telephone?

A shared landline phone with VOIP service is located in the kitchen of the apartment suite. Residents will be able to use the phone to make on-campus and local phone calls. If a resident wishes to have a landline phone in his/her bedroom, s/he will have the option to get one for an additional cost. Each resident will be able to sign-up for a personal long-distance code for proper billing of long-distance calling.

How many computer data ports are in each room?

There is one hardwired, Gigabit Ethernet service port in each bedroom; however, the entire building has Wi-Fi access.

Who should residents contact if they are having problems getting their computer set up?

Residents should contact the HUB at x4357, if they are experiencing computer-related issues.

Who has access to the residence hall?

Only students who are residents of the hall will have access to the building. The resident will need to swipe his/her Laker Card, in order to enter the building. All guests must show valid photo ID and be signed-in/out at the Community Desk.

Where should residents go to have the Laker Card programmed for access to the residence hall?

Residents’ Laker Cards should already be programmed for access; however, if there is an issue with a resident’s Laker Card not working properly, s/he should report the problem to the Housing Office during business hours or the 24-Hour Community Desk if it is after business hours.

Why do guests have to show their valid photo ID at the 24-Hour Community Desk?

Residents’ guests must show valid photo ID to verify their identity. This is a security measure to ensure that the Residence Life staff can determine who is in the building at any given time.

Whom should residents contact in the event of an emergency?

Residents may contact the Resident Assistant on-duty or the 24-Hour Community Desk in the event of an emergency. In a serious situation, such as a fire, physical fight, medical emergency, etc., a resident should immediately contact Public Safety or 911.

When are Resident Assistants on duty?

Resident Assistants are students too, and they have academic and extracurricular activities outside of the building. Each Resident Assistant has specific days/times when s/he is “on-duty.” A schedule will be posted and made available to the residents.

When is there someone working the hall office?

The residence hall office will be staffed Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. However, there is always a professional staff member on-call when the office is closed.

Are pets allowed?

No, pets are not allowed in the residence halls.

What if a resident needs special accommodations for a disability?

Can first-year students have a car on campus?

Yes, residents will be able to park in the lot designated for resident students, as well as the other student lots. Residents must obtain a parking permit through the Office of Public Safety and must ensure that their guests park in the appropriate designated guest parking areas.

Is there a number of credit hours in which a student must be enrolled, in order to be eligible to reside in on-campus housing?

A resident must be a full-time student, enrolled in at least 12 credit hours, in order to reside on-campus. If a resident were to drop to part-time status after move-in, s/he will be AT LEAST responsible for payment for the Fall semester and possibly the Spring semester, unless a “Request to Terminate” has been approved, per the stipulations of the Housing Contract.

Are non-Clayton State students allowed to live in the residence hall?

Only full-time-enrolled Clayton State students are eligible to live on campus.

What if I want to move-out before my Housing Contract ends?

The Housing Contract is for the academic year (Fall semester and Spring semester), and each resident is financially responsible for paying the Housing Fee for both semesters. In the event that a resident is longer a Clayton State Student due to graduation, withdrawal from the University, active military service, medical withdrawal, required internship/study abroad, or academic dismissal, s/he may request an early termination of the Housing Contract without full penalty by submitting a “Request to Terminate” form to the Director of Housing and Residence Life with the appropriate supporting documentation.

What is included in the housing fee?

The housing fee includes your room and all basic utilities. Long-distance telephone service and premium cable services are available for additional charges.

Can residents have overnight guests?

Yes, residents are permitted to have overnight guests, which are defined as any non-resident who is not signed-out by Midnight, or is signed-in between the hours of Midnight and 8:00 PM. However, residents are only permitted to have overnight guests for up to two nights in a seven-day period. Please the Visitation Policy.
